As any significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
